About Luke Timmerman

Who am I?
Luke Timmerman is a biotech journalist, author, and entrepreneur. I’m the founder of Timmerman Report, a biotech newsletter, and author of “Hood: Trailblazer of the Genomics Age.” My Climb to Fight Cancer campaigns on Mt. Everest and Kilimanjaro have raised $2.5 million for cancer research at Fred Hutch since 2017.

Why The Timmerman Traverse?

From Life Science Cares:
“At Life Science Cares, we’re always open to new ideas on how to advance our work. So when mountaineer extraordinaire and biotech journalist Luke Timmerman approached us about organizing a fundraising hike, we knew it would have to be a success. This is a man who summitted Mount Everest and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthy causes in the process. We’re confident this event will be a fun bonding experience and a powerful fundraiser for LSC.

The Timmerman Traverse benefitting Life Science Cares will take an intrepid group of hikers 23 miles across the Presidential Traverse in the White Mountains over the course of three days. Our team of 20 leaders in the life science sector have all committed to raise $25,000 and cumulatively raise $500,000 for Life Science Cares and our network of 27 partner nonprofit organizations.

Our partner nonprofits apply the very best research based solutions to helping our neighbors on the path to self-sufficiency. Paired with volunteer hours as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated goods, Life Science Cares is a strong partner to these organizations, supporting them every step of the way.

To date, the Life Science Cares network has distributed more than $4.5 million in grants and performed 12,000 volunteer hours to support human service organizations in Greater Boston and Philadelphia. We’re on track to grow exponentially with the addition of affiliate sites in San Diego and the Bay Area launched in 2021.”

Comments from Expedition Veterans

“What was completely unexpected on our Kilimanjaro trip was the level of camaraderie that immediately formed in the group – like-minded, interesting and interested, generous and unquitting”

Nina Kjellson, general partner, Canaan Partners

“The proposition: join Luke and equal numbers of men & women in our industry to raise money for cancer research at the Fred Hutch and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. This was the experience of a lifetime. Breathtaking scenery – yes. Challenging physically – yes. Outstanding guides & support personnel – yes. Life-long bonding experiences – yes!”

Bill Newell, CEO, Sutro Biopharma

“Luke’s Climb to Fight Cancer trip to Kilimanjaro was simply the best chance ever to get to know a high quality group of biotech executives well. And so much more. Consider his future trips if you love the industry and hate cancer.”

Bob More, partner, Alta Partners

The Climb to Fight Cancer EBC trip was life changing on many levels, personally and professionally. I applaud and thank Luke Timmerman who is an entrepreneurial leader with an ability to build a diverse, cohesive team motivated to give back.
